SAVECANARIAS.ORG

Last 26th July this world project of signature collection was born to save The Canary Islands from the imminent threat by pro-oil forces. European an

UUEE universities, scientific committees from more than 100 countries, UICN, organizations like Oceana, Greenpeace, WWF, CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT Friends of Earth, SECAC, cultural, artistic and social Foundations, that is, hundred thousands of people are mobilising because not everything is lost yet.
After the passing of the oil drilling in the Canarian seabed by the Spanish government last March 2012, people have got discouraged but savecanarias.org aims to reactivate the fight worldwide so that millions of spots in the planet give their support to The Islands cause.
As you can read in the petition, «The Canary Islands are one of the most well-known tourist destinations in the world, receiving more than 12 millions visitors annually». To the tourist sector, as the main source of income in the Islands, we must add the protected species in the Canary Islands, as well as remind that the 47% of their land is protected by agreements and laws from the United Nations, the European Union and Spain itself; we musn’t forget, either, that the drinking water in The Islands is obtained from the sea, so a black tide could jeopardise life here. If we also bear in mind that the oil drilling must take place more than 5000m deep under a seabed located in ultra-deep water— a bottom of high seismic activity — the risk of black tides isn’t minimal, as they try to make us believe, advanced though technology may be nowadays.
And as a last, but not least, point to bear in mind «Reduction of the effects of climate change is a responsibility of all Earth’ inhabitants, therefore it is absolutely essential that we reduce the use of fossil fuel and substitute it for renewable energy. The Canaries have the perfect climatic conditions to achieve this important goal».

If you want to read the whole petition and sign it, enter savecanarias.org and support the initiative against this brutality. The future of the Canary Islands is still in our hands.
